The RNG gods owe me an apology

Forty-one runs at the same boss. The wiki says the drop rate is 8%, which means the odds of my last week happening were roughly one in thirty. I have done the math so many times the calculator app shows up in my recently used.

At some point, farming a drop stops being gameplay and starts being a devotional practice.

An 8% drop means each run is a weighted coin. Forty-one tails in a row sits at about 3.3%. Improbable, not impossible — which is exactly the kind of sentence that keeps people at slot machines.

A complete inventory of the junk drawer

Every house has one drawer that answers to no organizational system. Mine contains, among other things, three unmatched batteries, a hotel key card from a hotel I cannot name, and a rabbit’s foot of uncertain provenance.

The junk drawer is not clutter. It is a portfolio of things that might be useful someday, diversified across every category of maybe.

A full audit, item by item, including the twist ending where one of the batteries turns out to be good.

The gas station burrito oracle

There is a gas station forty minutes past Sedona that sells burritos out of a warmer older than I am. I stopped because the fuel light demanded it. I stayed because of the sign taped to the register.

You don’t pick the burrito. You just find out which one was yours.

I kept score for a week. The oracle went two for three, which is better than my fantasy league picks and most economists.

That’s the three newest.Everything older is in the archive →
