I bet you thought I was dead. Well, too bad. Still here, still kicking ass.
Boy, has it been a long time since the last time I blogged, and a whole lot has happened since then. Let’s just start with the big stuff:
- I moved to New Mexico.
- I got a house.
- I’m attending UNM, and that’s a whole mess on its own.
You get all that detail later. For now, I’d like to talk about the move and my thoughts on New Mexico.
They were going up a little over $500 a month on me, which was crazy.
The Move
Back in Houston, when I was renting an apartment, I read about how big conglomerates were buying up apartment complexes and raising the prices because basically no one had anywhere else to go. I didn’t see it personally, but right before I moved, I got a renewal notice for my apartment, which had just been bought up by Greystar. They were going up a little over $500 a month on me, which was crazy.
Luckily, a week before I got this notice, my sister and her wife had bought a house in New Mexico. We had been talking about it for a while, and our cousin had been selling it pretty hard. I was vaguely interested; cause, I could go back to college here rather easily with the Opportunity Scholarship. When they bought the house, they asked if I would like to rent a room. They now had two houses, and they didn’t want to just leave this one sitting here, the one in New Mexico that is.
At first, I was like, “Let me think about it.” I was already set in my ways and in the apartment. A week later, I got that notice, and the first thing I did was call my sister and ask, “Is that house still on the table?”
Here I go, moving to New Mexico.
When I was moving out of the apartments, a whole lot of people, at least 10%, were leaving because everyone had their price raised, which sucks. We all scattered to the winds. My trip to the Land of Enchantment was rather smooth.
Not long after I moved in, a deer tried to break in and violate me. I’m pretty sure that’s what it was wanting to do. Check out this Ring camera footage. It’s wild.
After chasing that crazy deer away from the safety of the backyard wall, I had to go to the front and clean off all the blood it had put on the front door. It was nasty. My cousin Mandy said there was probably something wrong with that deer, but I just think it was out to get me. Might be out there still today, just waiting for me to let my guard down.
The first year here I went to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta three times, trying to see the Mass Ascension and the Night Glow, and the weather was so bad that every single time I went, it got canceled. Not the best first Balloon Fiesta. Luckily, since then, I’ve been able to go and experience the Fiesta in its full glory multiple times.

I mentioned one of the reasons I moved here was to attend UNM. You have to be a resident of New Mexico for at least a year before you get the scholarship. During that year, I kept wondering how I was going to go to college and take care of the boy, Magnum, my dog, who was already a 15-year-old boxer. About two months before I had to start college, he got really sick, and his lungs were filling up with fluid. I spent I don’t know how many thousands of dollars on the ER and vet visits, but there was no making him better. I had to make that awful choice: put down your dog out of kindness, because he was suffering.

I’ll write a blog about Magnum here soon. Me and the boy lived with each other for 15 years. I haven’t gotten another dog since. There are positives and negatives to having a dog, and the big negative is that if you travel a lot, it just costs money to board your dog or have someone watch him. Anyway, that’s a blog for another time.
Yea, New Mexico is just gorgeous country, too. There’s so much open land because the government owns so much of it and the reservations own so much of it. The population here is way lower than in Texas, so I don’t know. Everything’s just kind of calmer and slower here. No one’s in a hurry. It’s great.

Anyway, this is just an update post. I’m not dead. I’m back. Expect more. You all suck. I’m the best. All that. Later.
